• Review: Green Lantern - First Flight

I've been a fan of Green Lantern since I was a kid when I first saw him on Super Friends. Then when I started collecting comics in my teen years I spent a small fortune on GL comics. So when I saw that Warner Bros. was releasing a direct-to-DVD Green Lantern movie I was very interested.

Green Lantern: First Flight is the origin story of Hal Jordan, the greatest of the Green Lanterns. Warner Bros. went all out with voice actors: there is Christopher Meloni ("Law and Order: SVU"), Victor Garber ("Eli Stone"), Tricia Helfer ("Battlestar Galactica") among others.

Availability: Green Lantern: First Flight is available on Blu-Ray and DVD.

The Skinny: Hal Jordan is a test pilot recruited into the Green Lantern Corp. by a mysterious alien who lay dying. The GL Corp. is run by the Guardians and they are unsure of Hal's ability, so they assign Sinestro as his instructor. Little do they know Sinestro is plotting to destroy them. It is up to Hal to defeat Sinestro and save the Guardians and the GL Corp.

The Good: The animation is what we've come to expect from Warner Bros. animated films like Batman and Superman. The style is good and pretty much the same. Voice acting is a different beast from acting in front of a camera or on stage and these tv veterans pull it off well.

    The Bad:
If you're a die hard Green Lantern fan you might be disappointed with the origin story. While the concept is the same the execution is quite different. The writing, for the most part is good, but there are some bad dialog choices. When an alien screams "Holy crap!" I cringed. Just because it's a PG-13 movie doesn't mean you have to try and use what some would consider dirty words.

    The Verdict:
Overall Green Lantern: First Flight was an enjoyable movie. If you're not opposed to animated films, direct-to-video or comic book adaptations you might be entertained by this film.

I have been flip-flopping on whether or not to buy this. I love the DC DTDVD stuff. Justice League: New Frontiers was awesome and this looks to be the same style.

Hal Jordan is the best of the GL's! Guy who? It is good to see him getting his screen time after seeing other GL's hog the spotlight.

This will have to tie me over until the big screen version comes out which I hope is done well...please let it be done well.
